The Children's Department of Huntsville Public Library strives to provide educational, culturally-enriching, and entertaining materials and activities for children of all ages. Please view the list of our current programs for children as well as other related information. 


Summer Reading Program

 

The Huntsville Public Library welcomes you to “A Universe of Stories!” at this year’s Summer Reading Program held from Saturday, June 1 through Friday, July 12. The last official day to turn in your reading log is Friday, July 19. For every three books read or for every library program attended, participants will receive a raffle ticket.  Participants can use that raffle ticket to enter for a chance to win a raffle prize. Those who read at least three books will win a guaranteed prize while supplies last. To participate in this all-ages program, Click here for sign up or sign up in the library. Bird Migration

The Huntsville Public Library is pleased to host the Huntsville Audubon Society as they lead two exciting all ages programs in the library over the summer. The second program will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16 and is called “Bird Migration: How, Why, and Where.” Registration for these programs is not required. ​All About Butterflies


Appreciate the beauty of nature at “All About Butterflies” with the Houston Museum of Natural Science presentation at the Huntsville Public Library. Learn about metamorphosis and more in this interactive program with caterpillars and butterflies. The HMNS Butterfly Show has been rescheduled for Friday, July 19 in the Staggs Community Room. Multiple 30 minute shows will be held during the afternoon. This program is best suited for ages 2 and up. This is a registration-only event. ​The Youth Book Club

The Youth Book Club is back at the Huntsville Public Library.  Interested 3rd-7th graders are invited to attend the book club at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 to discuss their favorite reads of the summer. ​Back to School Bash


The summer is almost over! The Huntsville Public Library is partnering with the Sam Houston Statue Center and other community organizations to host the 2019 Back to School Bash. Preschool through high school students at the Bash will receive free school supplies while supplies last. The student must be present to receive supplies. The 2019 Back to School Bash will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 7 at the Walker County Storm Shelter. ​Art Contest

The Huntsville Public Library Friends’ Art Contest will be held during Summer 2019. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains.” The contest is open for all five through 18 year olds and fifteen winners will be selected.  Correctly filled out submission forms are required to be eligible as is artwork that adheres to the submission guidelines. The deadline to submit your artwork is Monday, August 12. Winners will be announced in September. ​Homework Help


Stumped by math homework? The Huntsville Public Library will be offering Math Homework Help for elementary and junior high aged students on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30-6 p.m. starting August 21 in the Nash Board Room. Participants can use library laptops or ask a library staff member for help. Registration is not required. For more information, please contact Children’s Coordinator Rachel McPhail at 936-291-5910.

Mother Goose Lapsit


Do you have children ages 2 or under?  If so, then Mother Goose Lapsit is a story time designed for you! Enjoy a half-hour of developmentally appropriate activities featuring stories, songs, and rhymes Mondays at 10:30 a.m. This program introduces little ones to the story time experience and is perfect for developing language and vocabulary. Sign-up is not required. July dates are as follows: July 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29.  Occasionally, the library will cancel Mother Goose Lapsit in advance due to scheduling conflicts or holidays. Story Time 

Story Time is a fun early literacy program for kids 5 and under at the Huntsville Public Library.  Join us for interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and crafts three times a week in the Staggs Community Room.  The early literacy practices featured each week help build the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. Story Time offers caregivers and parents an opportunity to experience early literacy practices in action, discover great books and resources for home use, and socialize with other parents after Story Time.  There is something new each week! Sign-up is not required. Story Time is held on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday mornings, and Friday mornings. Morning sessions are at 10:45 and evening sessions are at 5:30 p.m. July dates are as follows: July 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 19, 23, 24, and 26. Occasionally, the library will cancel Story Time in advance due to scheduling conflicts or holidays. Family Movie Night


Don’t forget Family Movie Night at the Huntsville Public Library.  Due to scheduling conflicts with the Independence Day holiday, Family Movie Night has been rescheduled to Friday, July 19 at 4:30 p.m. Enjoy a free family-friendly movie and refreshments and beat the heat!
